Exposure Control & Composition Assignment Brief

Photo 1: Differential Focus

My chosen image is of a pencil case which I found near the canteen. I feel that this image is a great example of differential focus, it easily captures what differential focus is, how somethings can appear to be clear while having the background being blurred. This image falls into the Differential Focus category as the object in the foreground pops out and catches the eye, while the background objects are blurred together and refocuses the attention to the pencil case. Although I found this pencil case lying on the table, it wasn't my first attempt to take a shallow DOF photo. I continued to have problems with taking the photos, whether it was that I couldn't change the focus of the object having either everything being blurred or nothing. Also all of my previous photos didn't include people in the background which you can see further allows the shallow differential focus to focus on the pencil case and ignore the people. I could of taken more photos to look for one which best represents a shallow differential focus, whether that involved me changing the aperture, ISO or using another location.

Photo 2: Shutter Speed

The image I chose to represent shutter speed was of a car driving past. I think that this image represents the chosen criteria as the image is still clear enough to make out that it is a car moving but also that its not stationary and that the slight blurred image shows that. I felt that using a bigger lens gave me more of a unique photo as it allowed me to get shots from far away, which is why the shot wasn't centred as i wished to show a comparison of a moving object and on stationary. However as it was a new lens, I had not properly learned how to use it as when I tried to get a photo from closer to the road it would not allow it. If I were to do it again I would first fully understand how to use all of my equipment and secondly have a backup of some of the photos I took to represent shutter speed as there was a file corruption in several of them. Another thing I would do is I would do is not go right next to the  road as some of the drivers didn't want there

Photo 3: Street Photography

My chosen image is meant to represent a street photography image. This photo represents what I feel to be an interesting image of an urban street as it show an almost empty road outside my estate which is usually always busy. It also shows an oncoming car which may be able to be interpreted as something interesting. I  believe what really works for this image is the on coming car as it can represent danger in our everyday day lives, such as crossing the road. I did struggle to figure out what was meant by a spontaneous event as it would be difficult to time such an event so I thought the next best thing would be of a near empty road , then suddenly a car zooming down the road. This image to me can easily represent the dangers of an urban area, like crossing the road or waiting on a bus as you can never know what will come down the road.

Photo 4: The Golden Rule

My chosen image was taken on top of  the hill nest to the Gaelic pitch. This image was chosen to represent the compositional rules, the Golden Ratio. I felt that this photo accurately portrays the use  of this rule for a number of reasons. If an imaginary curve were to be drawn across the picture following it would allow the viewer to proper gather all and any information to be gathered from the photo as well  as showing of everything there is too see in the photo. I personally struggled to find something too photo that accurately shows the use of the golden rule and had to take many different photos, none of  which I felt worked. Then I photographed this image from atop the hill next to the Gaelic pitch which showed everything from the  Link building to the S Block and the bus delivering players. What I felt could've been improved was the aperture level, it could've been increased to let more light in and to make the sky more visible or I could've taken the photos on a less cloudy day.

Photo 5: Leading Lines

My chosen image is of the duck pond outside of the TU Dublin campus. It is meant to be an example of leading lines and how they are able to draw people into the whole picture just by following them. The leading lines in this picture is of the wall separating the duck pond. It travels all across the screen showing off the whole image. I chose this image as I felt that the whole pond/lake were properly shown within due to the leading lines spreading across the picture all the back to the trees and  starting from the water. If I were to do this again I think I may try to find something more obviously seen as I don't think that a complete stranger if shown this image would recognise the leading lines if they weren't told about them, whereas if it was of a filed of long grass and a trail had been made that would be seen a lot more easily.

Photo 6: My Own Choice

My chosen image is of a small hedgehog statue placed out my back, which was used as another example of shallow differential focus and also the Golden ratio. I can see the foreground image clearly and the background images remain blurred, however compared to my previous DOF image, the objects in the background are more clear and can be defined while not drawing focus away from the foreground object. I also believe that this photograph employs the use of the Golden rule as the background images remain visible enough to attract attention but also lead to the focus of the hedgehog. I took several photos but  they were unusable due to poor shutter speed use and also movement making the objects unclear. The only thing I felt that needed to be improved upon was my use of aperture, however I don't know how much of a difference it could make with the weather being what it was.
